What is Shiatsu? Shiatsu Massage is a flexible, holistic approach to health and well-being that is extremely effective for helping to maintain balance in our busy lives. Stress not only creates discomfort, it builds up in our bodies over time, creating mental, physical, and emotional tension that can eventually create more serious health problems. The majority of common illnesses today have their roots in stress. A Typical Session Shiatsu sessions normally last 1 hour. Unlike many types of massage, no oils or lubricants are used, and you will remain fully clothed (therefore, please wear or bring comfortable clothing to change into). Shiatsu Massage generally involves pressure, kneading, shaking, stretching, and tapping on various parts of the body. Most sessions involve treatment of the entire body including the abdomen and chest. It is of great importance that you as client feel comfortable at all times, and that you know you have the power to stop or change the course of the session at any time.
Shiatsu treatments allow you to relax deeply, and are an excellent way to reduce the effects of stress on your body, mind, and emotions. Stress reduction optimizes the functioning of all the body’s systems, and results in increased well-being, mental clarity, and overall vitality. In addition, Shiatsu is an effective treatment and preventive measure for the following conditions. Pain Chandler is especially familiar with the treatment of musculoskeletal pain, including pain caused by injury, auto accidents, fibromyalgia, chronic illness, carpal tunnel syndrome, or other repetitive motion injuries. Related conditions that also benefit include neuropathy, menstrual discomfort, and sports injuries.
Trauma Most of us carry memories of painful or shocking experiences that have unresolved emotional content. Buried deep beneath the surface of our consciousness, these memories can drain our emotional energy and hamper our ability to think clearly, to accurately interpret our experience, and to perform to our potential. Over time shiatsu increases self awareness and makes deep memories easier to access. Specific techniques like guided visualization, body mapping, and body scanning help to safely approach and resolve frozen patterns.
Pediatric Care Children are incredibly sensitive beings, and highly susceptible to stress. Skillful nurturing touch is beneficial for all children, and especially for those that have experienced trauma either in the birthing process or later in life. Chandler is trained in Craniosacral Therapy which when combined with shiatsu is very effective in treating a wide variety of childhood complaints including birth-related stress and trauma, unusual head shape, colic, bowel trouble, teeth grinding, poor sleep patterns, respiratory problems, colds and flus, reccurrent fevers, and school related stress or sports injuries for older children. Chandler's practice is child- and parent- friendly, and stroller and wheelchair accessible. Cancer For those suffering from cancer, shiatsu is an excellent palliative treatment, helping to ease pain and give an increased sense of well-being. Regular sessions during chemotherapy and other cancer treatments can help to relieve the stresses inherent in living with these difficult conditions. For more information, visit Mesothelioma.com, The Shiatsu Society, and PubMed.gov. Migraine and Headache Whether related to stress, injury, or illness, head pain is one of the complaints most commonly treated using Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Where chronic headaches are involved, the preventive aspect of shiatsu is especially important.
Insomnia, Anxiety, and Depression Shiatsu is very effective in the management of insomnia, anxiety, and mental or emotional imbalance. A combination of gentle, calming techniques and firm pressure help to relax the nervous system and focus the mind. For emotional imbalances, regular shiatsu treatments combine consistent, safe human touch and interaction with specific, non-invasive therapeutic protocols.
Digestive Problems Shiatsu includes a wide variety of massage techniques for the abdomen, which help to strengthen, regulate, and cleanse the digestive system, as well as the other abdominal organs. These methods can help to relieve the symptoms of indigestion, gastric reflux, bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and constipation.
Pregnancy Complaints Cramping, backache, neck and shoulder tension, anxiety, insomnia, and generally the aches and discomforts occurring during this special period of transition can all be eased somewhat by regular shiatsu treatments. Treatment throughout the pregnancy is especially effective as it supports relaxation and balanced muscle tone. Chandler has worked with many women during this period, including his own wife, and is happy to make special accommodations for individual comfort.
General Recovery Shiatsu treatments support healthy immune function and improve circulation, metabolism, and vitality. Because of its flexibility, shiatsu can easily be adapted to benefit people in almost any state of health or recovery. Chandler has worked with a number of clients post-surgery, during and post-chemotherapy, post-partum, and during recovery from moderate to severe auto incidents.
